You set up a smart home and want lights to turn on at sunset or a fan to kick in when it gets hot. You think it'll just work. Then your internet goes down and nothing happens. Why.

Some smart home systems have a small box in your house that runs the controls. If that box is running things, they keep working even when the internet is dead. Other systems run everything from a company's server somewhere else. If the internet dies, they stop. We added a guide that explains the difference, what those boxes do, and which systems actually work without internet. Some brands let you run everything from your house. Others only work through voice assistants like Alexa, which means you're always dependent on the internet.

This matters in the Coastal Bend where storms knock out power and internet. A system that works from your house is more reliable.
