Most smart home systems depend on the internet. Your WiFi drops, the internet hiccups, and suddenly your lights won't turn on and your thermostat stops listening. That's a problem in a hurricane or a simple cable outage.

Some systems work differently. They run a small box in your house that talks to your devices over your home WiFi. When internet goes out, the box can still run your scheduled routines and respond to motion sensors. You lose some features that need the internet, like knowing when you leave the driveway and automatically turning on lights. But your basic automations keep working.

Big brand systems often only let you control them through their app or voice assistant, which means you're stuck if the internet is down. If you're building something new, systems that don't depend on the internet are worth asking about before you commit.
