We have a system that watches what people search for and figures out which service category they probably want. A month ago it started putting towing searches in the dental bucket. That's wrong and it breaks everything downstream.

The problem was in our code. A backslash character was being interpreted as a special character instead of a regular backslash. So every search that should have been sorted into towing went somewhere else.

We fixed it by rewriting how the code handles that character. It's the kind of bug that's invisible until you dig into what the code was actually producing. Good reminder to trust the data, not just the code.
