Common questions
Why did my last coating job fail so fast?
In most cases the prep, not the paint. Coating adheres to a profile, and if the steel was not blasted to the standard the product data sheet calls for, or if soluble salt was left on the surface, the film loses grip from underneath no matter how good the material is. On the coast, salt contamination is the single most common cause of an early failure, and it is invisible without a test.
What is a coating system and why not just use one product?
A system is layers doing different jobs. The primer bonds to the steel and provides the corrosion protection, often through zinc. The intermediate coat builds thickness and chemical resistance. The topcoat handles UV, color, and gloss. Using one product for all three means giving up whichever job that product does poorly, and on the coast that is usually corrosion protection.
How do I know I got the thickness I paid for?
Dry film thickness readings, taken with a gauge and recorded. Coating is sold and specified by thickness, and thin application is the easiest corner to cut because it is invisible once it is dry. Ask for the readings as a deliverable. On critical work a holiday detector is also run to find pinholes that would let moisture reach the steel.
Is there a special requirement for a drinking water tank?
Yes. A lining in contact with potable water is normally required to be certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, which is a product certification for materials in drinking water systems. That is not a general purpose epoxy. Confirm the specific product certification in writing before anyone sprays anything into a water tank.
Can you coat over rust instead of blasting?
There are surface tolerant products designed for exactly that, and they have a legitimate place on maintenance work where full removal is not practical. What they do not do is perform like a properly prepped system. They buy time. If the steel matters structurally or the asset has decades left, the honest answer is prep it correctly once instead of buying time three times.
How is this different from hiring a painter?
Different trade, different failure consequences. Residential and commercial painting is about appearance and coverage. Industrial coating is corrosion engineering, specified by product data sheet, prep standard, film thickness, and inspection, on assets where the failure mode is section loss in steel rather than a wall that looks tired. How often should coastal steel be recoated?
Sooner than the inland cycle, and the honest answer is that it depends on the exposure zone rather than a calendar.
