Common questions
Is it still called sandblasting if they are not using sand?
Almost nobody blasts with silica sand anymore, and the name stuck anyway. OSHA's respirable crystalline silica standards made sand impractical for most work, so crews run coal slag, garnet, steel grit, or crushed glass. If a contractor tells you he is blasting with actual silica sand in the open, that is a reason to ask a lot more questions.
What surface prep standard do I need?
It comes from the coating, not from the blaster. The coating manufacturer's data sheet specifies the prep, usually as an SSPC standard such as commercial blast or near white blast, plus a surface profile depth. Get that number from whoever supplies the coating and put it in the scope, because a coating applied over the wrong prep fails early and the warranty goes with it.
How soon do I have to paint after blasting?
Fast, and faster here than most places. Freshly blasted steel starts flash rusting as soon as it is exposed, and on the coast the humidity and salt make that window short, sometimes only hours on a humid day. Blasting and priming should be scheduled as one continuous operation, not as two separate trips.
Will blasting damage my brick or concrete?
It can, badly, if the media and pressure are wrong. Aggressive media on soft brick erodes the hard fired face and leaves the soft body exposed, which then weathers fast and cannot be undone. For masonry, historic brick, and decorative concrete the answer is usually a soft media such as sodium bicarbonate or crushed glass at reduced pressure, and a test patch before anyone commits to the whole wall.
What happens to all the spent media and old coating?
It becomes waste, and what kind of waste depends on what came off. Spent media carrying lead or other regulated material from an old coating has to be characterized and disposed of accordingly, not swept into a pile. Ask up front who is responsible for containment, collection, characterization, and disposal, because that is a common gap between a blasting quote and a coating quote.
Can this be done without shutting down my facility?
